Napoleon's soldiers built Fort Imperial on the summit of Mount Srđ in 1810, and the cable cars that now carry visitors to it follow a line first strung in 1969. The mountain rises 412 metres directly behind the walled city, a limestone ridge with almost no vegetation and a single serpentine road. For most of the twentieth century it was a military position rather than a viewpoint. Artillery batteries occupied the crest during the 1991–1992 siege, and the fort was shelled repeatedly. The cable car was destroyed and did not run again until 2010. What draws people up the ridge now is the drop. The southern face of Srđ falls away in a clean, uninterrupted line toward the coastal road, and that geometry is what makes the dubrovnik zipline sunset viable at all: there is nothing between the launch platform and the sea but air.
